Can you be charged a foreign transaction fee in AUD?
Yes. The currency printed on a receipt does not always determine whether an Australian card charges an international transaction fee. An AUD purchase can still be an international transaction if the merchant or payment processor is overseas.
Why an AUD payment can attract the fee
The ACCC says a card issuer may charge an international transaction fee even when you choose to pay in AUD overseas. NAB describes an AUD payment processed outside Australia as a single-currency international transaction. Whether your particular card charges a fee, and how much, depends on its terms.
Three situations to check
- At an overseas terminal: you accept the merchant's offer to convert a local-currency price to AUD. This is dynamic currency conversion. The merchant's AUD rate may include a margin, and your card may still add an international transaction fee.
- On an Australian-looking website: a store displays AUD and may even use a .com.au address, but the transaction is processed overseas. The ACCC warns that the website's address and displayed currency do not prove where payment is processed.
- At an overseas ATM: the ATM offers to bill you in AUD. Check the conversion offer, your card's international fee and any separate ATM or cash-advance charge.
What does the fee add?
For a simple illustration, a 3% fee on an AUD 100 overseas transaction adds AUD 3, making the card charge AUD 103. That example assumes the issuer applies the fee to the AUD amount and that there are no other charges. A real card can apply different rules. If you choose a merchant's AUD conversion, the offered AUD 100 may already include a margin compared with paying in the local currency.
How to avoid surprises
- Find your card's “international transaction fee” or “foreign transaction fee” in its current fees schedule or Product Disclosure Statement.
- Check whether the fee applies to overseas transactions in AUD as well as foreign currency.
- At a terminal, compare the AUD offer with the local-currency amount and your card's likely conversion cost. Do not assume that selecting AUD removes the fee.
- For an online purchase, ask the merchant where payment is processed if the checkout does not disclose it.
Enter the merchant's AUD offer and your card's fees for each option. The tool uses Cotizave reference data when available; check your card's actual rate before paying.
